Digital Camera Buying Guide

I have had requests from individuals to recommend a quality starter digital camera at a low price. At this date, June 10, 2009, the reviews and user ratings have been very good for the Canon A1000 IS. It comes with 10 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, image stabilization, 2.5" fixed image viewer, and movie mode with sound. The price at Amazon.com is under $140. This is a quality camera that shoots great pictures and at a reasonable price.

For the serious outdoor photographer who needs more optical zoom, an excellent choice is the Canon Powershot SX10-IS. It comes with 10 megapixels, 20X wide angle optical zoom, image stabilization, 2.5" variable angle image viewer, and movie mode with sound. The variable angle viewer makes it easy to take shots close to the ground, such as for flowers, or overhead when in a crowd. Amazon.com delivered price is under $360. But, when it comes to electronics and technology, things can change quite rapidly. I suggest that you do your homework and I have a few suggestions.

  1. Listen to what your friends, relatives, and fellow workers have to say about their digital camera.

  2. Start writing things down, such as, what features others like in their camera, what features you would like in your camera, camera manufacturers and models, and where to get good prices.

  3. Don't be too overwhelmed by all the camera's capabilities, remember that there is the auto mode where you just point and shoot.

  4. Don't be pressured into thinking that more megapixels is better. If the largest photo you are going to print is 8x10, then 4 megapixels will do the job, but go with more so you'll have extra for cropping.

  5. I found this great website buying guide that walks you through the whole process of selecting a camera. Check it out at Photoxels. Also, another site that I like that has in depth camera reviews is Steve's Digicams.

  6. Before making your purchase, review my Online Shopping Guide.

Good luck and have fun.
