Windows Desktop Tip

How to Create a Shortcut Icon on the Desktop.

It depends on the type of shortcut you want. For this response, I will show you how to create 4 types of shortcuts using Windows XP.

  1. Program Shortcut: Click on the Start Button and select All Programs. Find the program you want from the list of programs, the entry you click on to execute the program. Right-click on this, then select Send To, then Desktop.

  2. File Shortcut:
Let's say that you have a spreadsheet file where you record your expenses and you want to get to it quickly. You can create a shortcut for your file and when you double-click on it, it will execute the program associated with it and display your spreadsheet. To create this Shortcut, click on the Start Button and select My Documents (providing that is where you stored the file). With the My Documents window open, browse to your spreadsheet file. Now, right-click on it and select Send To and then Desktop.

  3. Folder Shortcut:
If you have a folder that you frequently access which has several files and folders, then follow the same steps as #2 above and select the folder in which you want a Shortcut (exception - for My Documents select Show on Desktop). When you double-click on a folder Shortcut, Windows XP will display a window showing all the files and folders in that folder. If you want to move around some files, click on the menu button "Folders". This will give you a right and left pane so that you can drag and drop the files you want to move around.

  4. Website Shortcut:
There may be some websites that you go to everyday and would like to have a Shortcut on the Desktop rather than open the Favorites list and hunt for it. Another instance, is when you are doing research and you stumble on a site that you want to check out later and don't want to make a Favorites entry or write down the URL. While on the website, right-click in an open area, then select Create Shortcut, and then click OK.
