Computer Hardware Tip

Desktop versus Notebook

Notebook computers have come down significantly in price and are now somewhat competitive with desktop computers. The lower priced notebooks have sufficient power and features for most students and home users. At first impulse, you may think that its nice and compact, mobile for those occasional trips to relatives, and the price is low enough. But lets take a long hard look at all the pros and cons of owning and using a notebook computer.

  • Portability: The only and most significant advantage of a notebook over a desktop. The rule that I convey to clients is this; if you absolutely need portability, then buy a notebook otherwise stick with a desktop.

  • Battery: Notebook batteries will take about 500 charges. When you need a battery, expect to pay around $100 - $200 for a replacement. If you expect to have your notebook plugged in most of the time, this is less of a problem.

  • Processing Speed: Dollar for dollar, desktops provide more punch, especially for those interested in games. Although most low end notebooks have enough RAM and power for the average computer user.

  • Keyboard: The keyboard on a notebook in cramped. Desktop users have more choices and may prefer the ergonomically designed keyboard. Spilling coffee on a notebook keyboard can result in more damage to the computer than a desktop.

  • Mouse: Some people don't mind using a touch pad but I prefer a mouse. You may want to purchase a cordless optical mouse.

  • Screen: With a notebook, you are limited to about a 15" screen, anything larger would not be practical for mobility. The desktop users have more flexibility and may prefer a 19" or 21" screen for their work area.

  • Expansion: Notebooks have limited expansion capabilities within the unit. Since components are proprietary, you may not have many or any choices in upgrading the hard drive or CD burner to a DVD burner.

  • Repairs: Notebooks generally cannot be repaired locally and need to be returned to the manufacturer.

  • Speakers: Desktops have the advantage of having larger speakers with great sound quality. Notebooks have small speakers resulting in poor sound quality. You can overcome this with good quality headphones.

  • Durability: Notebook components are more fragile and susceptible to damage. Since notebook computers are carried away from the house, they are more prone to be stolen or dropped. Spend a little extra for a padded carrying case.
