Software Tip

How to Download a File or Program from the Internet.

For this exercise, I would like to use a real program at a real site so that you can see and experience the downloading process for yourself. The program I chose is one of my favorites. It is Faststone Image Viewer. So lets begin.

  1. Go to the download website. For our excercise this will be www.snapfiles.com.

  2. Once you get to the download site, you will need to search for the program. In the SEARCH box at the top right of the page, type in faststone. Now click the Search button.

  3. Scroll down and click on Faststone Image Viewer. Check the Product Details, is it free? Check the operating requirements and limitations. Read over the description. Will this program do what you want? If everything looks OK to you, click on the DOWNLOAD button.

  4. You will be saving the download file to your Desktop. A download dialog window will appear, click on the Save button. Another dialog window will appear for you to designate where to place the download file. Click on the Desktop icon in the left column, then click the Save button. A dialog window will be displayed showing you the progress of the download. If the window does not close automatically after the file is downloaded, close the dialog window and the browser window.

  5. To install the program, close or minimize all open windows so you can see your Desktop. Find the downloaded file and then double-click on it. Follow the instructions in the program installation windows.

Here are a couple of websites with short tutorials on downloading.
